Labs Alumni Simran Dhillon Making Strides in Fentanyl Detection

Written By: Lynda Ofume

Simran Dhillon and her team at FentaGone are currently making considerable strides in Fentanyl detection. They have created a syringe that detects the presence of Fentanyl which would prevent a lethal overdose.

The opioid crisis impact in Canada has reached overwhelming levels due to the pandemic, resulting in record-breaking fatalities.

Simran Dhillon, a League of Innovators Labs Alumni, recently joined us for a 43 Questions interview regarding the growth and the future achievements for FentaGone.

Q: When did you start FentaGone?

A: So I came up with the idea in around September 2019 but largely like I wanted to do something to help and support those living with addiction for a very long time just because it is something that hits really close to home, but more specifically, FentaGone came about around September.

Q: What made you start it?

A: Yeah, so throughout my life and being from bc and also Edmonton as well a lot there is a lot of addiction that exist I think we largely think it's going to get better and that different things are going to help with a lot of cutbacks with harm reduction especially by our government and addiction is getting way worse. The overdose rate is getting exponentially worse, and we have innocent people who are dying preventable deaths, and I think just knowing that these are people could be saved is a large inspiration to get into and invest yourself into harm reduction - and that is kind of how FentaGone kind of took rise.

Q: What impact would you like to achieve with FentaGone in the next couple of years?

A: Yeah, so I am hoping that you know we go through a research phase and it is successful, and so far we are hoping that it does look successful is that we do get integrated within current distribution services to those in vulnerable communities so that they receive important health information that they don't have already and kind of creating more equity within the help sphere in that end

Q: How useful was LOI to your growth and development of your company?

A: Yeah, it's been super Useful in the way that we've been able to network and learn so much from other people kind of in the same boat as that's like also try new things and figure it out, and I think that's the hardest part is we're all kind of just figuring it out, but other people in the same boat as us has been like super helpful

Q: What resources/piece of advice helped you with growing FentaGone to where it is now?

A: Yeah, so I go to the University of Alberta context, and you know it's a very helpful community in regards to I've done a lot of research over the last few years in regards to nerve generation & organ preservation. So I've done a lot of research and started growing off of those networks. Now that we're in two research labs, we have two mentors that have been super helpful in helping us understand the science behind things and also how to build things like trials and whatnot. So in itself, that's been super helpful, but also just learning from other people and learning from people with lived experience... [If you're] looking for resources, always like figure out your target audience and just get to know them a bit better.

Why Youth-Led Startups Should Apply to the Labs Accelerator

Amidst a global pandemic causing heightened uncertainty, technological advances creating an accelerating world, and the growing public awareness around global inequalities, the future remains a vast unknown for the next generation most impacted by the economic effects of COVID-19. Despite this, youth are stepping up to the plate armed with a distinct perspective and drive to solve some of Canada and the world's most pressing problems from the future of fentanyl drug testing, a fossil-free fashion future, work from home software, remote personal training, access to education, and more. Young entrepreneurs can and are making waves to create a better future for all of us while also building on the core competencies needed to thrive in the future of work for themselves through an entrepreneurial context such as empathy, complex problem solving, leadership, communication, creativity, and resiliency. It is our mission at the League of Innovators to shorten their path to success and fuel the fire they have as the next generation of Canada's entrepreneurs, changemakers, and innovators.

With that, here are five reasons why young entrepreneurs across Canada should apply to the League of Innovators Labs accelerator program.

The League of Innovators is a national Canadian charity supporting young entrepreneurs from discovery to acceleration through a suite of accessible programs. Labs is the League of Innovators’ premier 12-week accelerator program empowering young entrepreneurs all across Canada. The Labs program is delivered virtually with leading workshops, Ask Me Anything Sessions (AMAs), mentorship, coaching, and an ongoing support network for young people to succeed!

  1. Join a growing national community of other young entrepreneurs, changemakers and innovators. Connect with people embarking on a similar journey as yourself and get support, feedback, friendship, throughout the 12-week program and beyond through live sessions, our Slack community and our alumni community hours. Chances are that there is someone else who has been through it or felt similar challenges and wins as you have and will have.
  2. Empower yourself with learning resources to grow your knowledge base, entrepreneurial skills and mindset. The Labs program equips you with access to our resource bank, a venture package of perks and discounts exclusively for our community, and a directory of folks who can support you through milestones. In Labs we dive into three program pillars around: Founder First, Getting Your House in Order and Building Connections through each week’s theme. Some examples include The Brand, The Team, The Roadmap, The Raise, The Pitch and more!
  3. Build your confidence and expand your understanding of what’s possible for you and your startup. At the end of the Labs program, we celebrate at the Founder’s Showcase event where you pitch your startup to a curated panel (don’t worry we work with you to get there!). It’s so amazing to see all the incredible growth achieved throughout the 3 quick months. Even week to week in the Labs venture huddle peer groups that meet for an hour during the program with other founders in the Labs program working in a similar industry and stage, there is so much knowledge transfer and week to week transformative learning.
  4. Network with industry experts, serial entrepreneurs and investors. Each week there are about four hours of live workshops to build your knowledge through lived experience and technical knowledge. Get ready to apply learnings as you go and build your toolkit of knowledge to draw upon when you need it most. Not to mention office hours and the opportunity to connect with people who can help move the dial in building your business.
  5. Did we mention that the Labs program is: No Fees. No Equity. No Strings Attached. You can be anywhere in Canada with an internet connection building any type of startup business, emerging non-profit or social enterprise in any industry. Diversity creates the conditions for innovation to happen! You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

To date, The League of Innovators has worked with 400 young entrepreneurs across Canada who have become Forbes Top 30 Under 30, Peter Thiel Fellows, Fast Company World Changing Ideas, and yes have scaled their startups to wildly successful businesses.

In sum, the pandemic has revealed many inequities whether it’s education, gender inequalities, racial injustice, environmental injustice, and so much more. These disparities have created a larger divide and amplified the need for immediate innovation and entrepreneurialism action across sectors. Who better to help inform how we build a better future than the next generation of leaders thinking about these problems every day - and doing something about it? The League of Innovators is here and we can’t wait to support them in their journey in building tomorrow’s businesses today.

Are you ready to accelerate your startup? Fuel your fire with Labs by applying to the Labs accelerator for youth-led startups! You can access the application here. Some key dates for you: Applications are open until July 5, Batch 7 of the 12-week Labs national virtual program starts September 7, 2021.

Second Virtual Showcase Features Young Entrepreneurs Across Canada

The League of Innovators’ (LOI) hosted their second celebratory Founders Showcase event virtually on Tuesday, November 24th. Young entrepreneurs from Vancouver, British Columbia to St. Johns, Newfoundland and everywhere in between gathered on Zoom to highlight the growth and impact of their startups made over the last few months in the LOI  Labs accelerator and Foundations incubator programs. Why host the event virtually? LOI’s programs are driven by the virtual environment in order to make our programs as accessible as possible (in addition to being free, with no equity take and no strings attached) - part of LOI’s mission to democratize access to entrepreneurship for youth in Canada.

About Labs

Labs is the LOI’s 12-week virtual accelerator program supporting youth-led startups across Canada to grow and scale. Labs is a barrier-free, sector-agnostic program fostering innovation, diversity and collaboration. 35 youth-led startups were selected through a competitive application process to dive into Labs 3 key learning pillars: Founder First, Get Your House in Order and Building Connections through leading workshops, Ask me Anything Sessions, coaching, peer support and access to resources.

Throughout the LABS program, the youth entrepreneurs refined the strategic direction of their businesses and built on their public speaking and pitching skills through workshops, 1:1 coaching, and peer support. We’d like to specifically thank Eric Termuende, a continuous supporter and advisor to LOI, who taught public speaking best practices from his work as a professional speaker at the  NoW of Work. We’d also like to thank our program partner, Volition Advisors who delivered a Pitch and Presentation Masterclass, a Strategic Planning Workshop, and pitch coaching 1:1 office hours, giving our entrepreneurs the tried and true tools and best practices on how to make their pitch polished.

About Foundations

Foundations is LOI’s 8-week idea incubator supporting entrepreneurial youth through problem discovery, validation and early-traction. Over the course of the program, young changemakers, innovations and entrepreneurs are guided through an 8-week learning module complemented with live workshops and 1:1 office hours with LOI mentors from our community of young entrepreneurs.

A particular congratulations to Serge Livingston, Jake Bradshaw, and Sophia Yang for winning the Foundations pitch competition at the Founders Showcase for their tackling the problems of fun treasure hunts, building non-romantic relationships online and ethical fashion. As part of their prizes, they will be welcomed and offered early acceptance into the Labs accelerator program Batch 6 beginning February 2021.

Much Deserved Thank You!

We would like to thank all the panellists who joined us at the Founders Showcase event from partner organizations who joined us and helped make the event not only a success but a reality as well. We appreciate your time, insights from your lived experience and mentorship.

Jonathan Ng (Product Manager at Waymo)
Jordan Rogers (Founder at Lloyd James Group)

Kevin Franco (Advisor at Platform Calgary)

Marina Radovanovic (Co-Founder and CXO at HeroHub and UX UI Researcher)

Sauraj Gambhir (Strategy, M&A, and Investments at RBC Ventures)

Sonia Sidhu (Co-Founder of WE REPRESENT)

Tricia Jose (Co-Founder of Arrive)

Yamila Franco (Co-Founder of AfroHub Market and Nyoka Design Labs)

Here are some of the LOI team’s favourite key takeaways from the pitch feedback:

  • Understand the vision you have for yourself in your startup whether you are building a lifestyle business or a billion-dollar idea
  • Pieter Schouppe: Successful non-profits look at sales as an integral part of their business in order to stay in business and thrive and grow in making your impact!
  • Matthew Smith: I failed 2 x in such a short amount of time we built and launched quickly and learned right away that our assumptions are wrong. Use manual and existing tech to test your theories. You can often test with no code and spending zero $$$
  • Pieter Schouppe: The equation for the perfect pitch = whats your problem + what’s your solution + how are you going to achieve it
  • “ There’s this sense of community that Im getting from LOi and from all of the different founders and the support that you’re getting from and providing to everyone else from the cohort and the batch and I just think that is a really really great environment to be in and just know that I think going beyond LOI and putting yourself out there for fundraising or customer development or for talking to users you’re going to be really faced with a lot of negativity and criticism and critical feedback and sometimes it’s going to be really tough to hear but important to hear but having this kind of base of positivity around people that mutually respect it is really real powerful and goes towards this idea of founders that really need support from other founders, and I think thats really great so kudos to everybody for attending” - Jonathan

And, last but definitely not least, a huge huge thank you to our community of amazing young entrepreneurs in LABS Batch 5 who have demonstrated a commitment to learning, community, and doing the work.  You can learn more about the next generation of Canadian entrepreneurs in this blog post. Agrio Labs

Founders: Eric Chaba (21, Edmonton AB) and Jonathan Mui (21, Edmonton AB)

The ultimate goal of Agriolabs was to do something about the vast amount of food waste that happens on this planet. We all waste food, and some food waste is almost unavoidable, but in North America the average
household will waste 40% of the food they bring home and that seriously sucks. So how are we going to change that? Well, we can't change the world overnight, but we with the systems we build, we can provide our customers with fresh food, grown as locally as it gets: in your own home. Food grown at home means no transportation & grocery store waste. No unknown chemicals. And no more melting veggies in the fridge.

@agrio.labs
